Recommended Books

These are all books I have read personally and highly recommend to further your understanding in each area. Many of them are in our lending library.

Autism

TACA Journey Guide

A comprehensive, easy-to-read manual for parents to help you through the first year of diagnosis. It covers how to get a diagnosis, what types of therapies are available, what the GFCF diet is, where and how to do biomedical treatment, and more. It is in our library and also available at www.tacanow.org for $15.

The Autism Book by Dr. Robert Sears

A thorough guide to the causes and treatment options for autism. Written in a wonderful conversational style with a step-by-step approach to biomedical treatment.

Children with Starving Brains by Dr. Jacquelyn McCandless

A more academic discussion of the many causes of autism and treatment options. This book discusses some areas more thoroughly than Dr. Sear’s book.

Healing the New Childhood Epidemics (Autism, Allergies, Asthma, and ADD/HD ) by Dr. Kenneth Bock

An in-depth look at the commonalities of these four epidemics–how they are related, how they can be treated, and what causes them.

Brain Function and Brain Development

The Brain that Changes Itself by Dr. Norman Doidge

For years the doctrine of neuroscientists has been that the brain is a machine: break a part and you lose that function permanently. But more and more evidence is turning up to show that the brain can rewire itself, even in the face of catastrophic trauma: essentially, the functions of the brain can be strengthened just like a weak muscle. Scientists have taught a woman with damaged inner ears, who for five years had had "a sense of perpetual falling," to regain her sense of balance with a sensor on her tongue, and a stroke victim to recover the ability to walk although 97% of the nerves from the cerebral cortex to the spine were destroyed. With detailed case studies reminiscent of Oliver Sachs, combined with extensive interviews with lead researchers, Doidge, a research psychiatrist and psychoanalyst at Columbia and the University of Toronto, slowly turns everything we thought we knew about the brain upside down. One of my top five books of all time.

Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain by John Ratey

Mr. Ratey takes us on a wild ride, examining the real connection between physical exercise and neurodevelopment and neurogenesis (the birth of new brain cells). His discussion of BDNF and other factors is highly enlightening and he gives specific parameters for the types and duration of exercise that one should engage in to benefit optimally. One of my top five books of all time.

Change Your Brain, Change Your Life by Dr. Daniel Amen

Dr. Amen looks at a wide range of neurological and psychiatric issues, such as depression, ADD/HD, and bipolar disorder and provides you with many brain scans of the patients he treated. In his practice, Dr. Amen utilizes SPECT scans to determine which portions of the brain are underactive or overactive and provides multiple means for correcting that. The book discusses multiple natural approaches, as well as traditional medications. In my opinion, this is a fascinating book and will make you feel like you never really knew anything about the brain before.

Disconnected Kids by Dr. Robert Melillo

Each year, an estimated 1.5 million children-one out of every six-are diagnosed with autism, Asperger's syndrome, ADHD, dyslexia, and obsessive compulsive disorder. Dr. Robert Melillo brings a fundamentally new understanding to the cause of these conditions with his revolutionary Brain Balance Program(tm). It has achieved real, fully documented results that have dramatically improved the quality of life for children and their families in every aspect: behavioral, emotional, academic, and social. Disconnected Kids shows parents how to use this drug-free approach at home, including an exercise program, how to identify food allergies, and social/behavioral assistance.

Smart Moves: Why Learning is not all in your Head  by Carla Hannaford, PhD.

Neurophysiologist and educator Dr. Carla Hannaford brings the latest insights from scientific research to questions that affect learners of all ages. Examining the body's role in learning, from infancy through adulthood she presents the mounting scientific evidence that movement is crucial to learning. Dr. Hannaford offers clear alternatives and remedies that people can put into practice right away to make a real difference in their ability to learn. She advocates more enlightened educational practices for homes and schools including: a more holistic view of each learner; less emphasis on rote learning; more experiential, active instruction; less labeling of learning disabilities; more physical movement; more personal expression through arts, sports and music; less prescribing of Ritalin and other drugs whose long term effects are not even known.

Vaccines

Nationally-recognized pediatrician examines vaccinating children. The first twelve chapters discuss each of the childhood vaccines–what they are for, how they’re made, and what the pros and cons are of giving them. It is an easy-to-use, thoughtful look at  the controversy of vaccines.Dr. Sears provides you the information and then leaves parents with the opportunity to decide what to do.
